Listen to this article Novartis has cash burning a hole in its pocket, even before the money has arrived. On Monday it decided to blow some of its future inflows on cancer drug specialist Advanced Accelerator Applications , whose depositary receipts trade in New York. If this $3.9bn buy marks the start of a spree, investors should be nervous. A temptation to splurge would be natural. Next spring, the Swiss drugmaker could receive up to $10bn for its stake in a consumer health joint venture with GlaxoSmithKline. It could raise much more via a sale of its eyecare business, Alcon, for which it paid Nestlé over $51bn in 2010. Novartis will do the AAA deal for cash, offering $82 per New York-listed depositary receipt. The latter, based in France, is unlisted and produces radiopharmaceuticals to diagnose and treat cancer.
