Apple could save 'hundreds of billions' of dollars if it makes a metal play, analyst says Apple could potentially save hundreds of billions of dollars over the next two to three years if the tech giant secures cobalt supplies, an analyst told CNBC on Thursday. Daniel Ives, chief strategy officer and head of technology research at GBH Insights, said it makes sense for Apple to try and secure cobalt supply given the rapid increase in the price of the resource over the last year-and-a-half. Cobalt is a key component for batteries that power smartphones and electric vehicles, and is also used by Apple products such as the iPhone and iPad for their batteries. "You're talking about something that could save them in the hundreds of billions over the course of the next two to three years," Ives told CNBC's " Squawk Box ."
