Oil looks to stretch losing streak to a fifth session Oil looked set to mark a fifth losing session in a row on Thursday, with prices for the U.S. benchmark at the lowest level since early January, a day after data showed record weekly U.S. crude output and a further rise in inventories. “It is now clear that oil prices in late January were too high to keep the oil market balanced in the long term. This is because U.S. oil production is now rising so sharply that there is a risk of renewed oversupply if OPEC does not voluntarily renounce market shares,” wrote commodity analysts led by Eugen Weinberg at Commerzbank, in a research note. March West Texas Intermediate crude CLH8, -1.80% on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell 34 cents, or 0.6%, to $61.45 a barrel. April Brent crude LCOJ8, -1.43% the global benchmark, shed 42 cents, or 0.6%, to $65.09 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe exchange.
