Investors rarely get excited about alumina, the material made from bauxite which eventually emerges as aluminum, but any commodity which more than doubles in price inside two-years is sure to have its fans even if the outlook is for a substantial price correction next year. Demand for alumina, which is made by a number of companies such as US-based Alcoa, Norsk Hydro of Norway and Alumina, an Australian company named after what it produces, keeps pace with aluminum which has been growing at around 4% a year. But what's caught the market off-guard is a series of supply disruptions which have seen the alumina price rocket up from an average of $254 a ton in 2016 to $640/t earlier this month before easing to around $595/t.
