Airline stocks sink after American’s outlook disappoints, analyst lowers targets Shares of air carriers suffered broad declines Thursday, after American Airlines Group Inc. provided a downbeat outlook, and J.P. Morgan lowered its price targets a week before earnings season kicks off for the sector. The NYSE Arca Airline Index XAL, -1.21% slumped 1.1% in midday trade, paring earlier losses of as much as 3.9%. Prior to Thursday’s decline, the index had hiked up 13% since closing on Dec. 24 at a more-than 2-year low. The airline sector’s weakness weighed on the broader transport sector, as the Dow Jones Transportation Average DJT, -0.39% edged up 4 points, or less than 0.1%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.19% rose 85 points, or 0.4%. The price declines of all the Dow transports’s airline components were shaving about 33 points combined off the index’s price. The sector and Dow transports decliners were led by American Airlines’ stock AAL, -6.28% which slid 4.
