Today's Market Was Primarily Fueled by Bad Positioning The market was primarily fueled by bad positioning today. The expectation was that the market was going to struggle due to the imposition of tariffs on Chinese goods but when Asian markets rallied on the news that caused the U.S. market to gap-up. That gap-up forced shorts to cover and pushed underinvested bulls to put more cash to work. That kept the buy pressure on most of the day and produced good breadth but some profit taking occurred in the last 90 minutes of trading which allowed the bears to relax a bit. Breadth was still quite good with around 4,400 gainers to 2,600 decliners. FAANG names led early but faded late in the day with Apple ( AAPL ) barely staying in positive territory. One interesting statistic recently is that the market has had a high number of both new highs and new lows. New lows exceeded new highs today despite the strength in the indices which is unusual.
