On December 12, 2018 Applied Genetic Technology ( AGTC ) announced results from its phase 1/2 trial treating patients with X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS). After the results were announced, it was noted that Biogen ( BIIB ) would end its partnership with the company due to lack of clinical activity in this study. Even though this program didn't succeed against this disease, AGTC does have other candidates in the clinic. I believe that the three readouts due in 2019 may provide a possible turnaround situation. Partnership Fallout The phase 1/2 XLRS trial was an open-label dose escalation study designed to look at the safety and efficacy of intravitreal administration of the AAV-based gene therapy to treat patients with XLRS. XLRS is caused by genetic mutations of the RS1 gene. It is a rare genetic condition that affects boys and men. The main symptom of this disease is progressive vision loss.
