Alibaba: Assessing The Relative Valuation Summary Alibaba experienced a turbulent 2018 and valuation metrics plummeted as a result. Compared to industry peers, BABA is more expensive, but the question is if there is a valid reason for the premium. Growth rates within the company and in the Chinese economy appear to fuel the premium price. Buy low, sell high. Easier said than done, but it is imperative to becoming a successful investor. The problem is determining what is 'low' and what is 'high'. Many look purely at the dollar value of a stock and come to conclusions based on this, which is arbitrary on its own. This article will, instead, focus on my go-to method for determining 'cheapness' - relative valuation ratios. These ratios put the price in perspective, comparing it to relative metrics such as sales and earnings. Again, easier said than done.
