For Some Reason, Even A Bad Chinese Economy Looks Pretty Good It’s getting increasingly hard to trust the numbers out of China, but someone has to. Weak business and consumer sentiment, coupled with a trade war that saw tariffs on China goods more than double in May have the Chinese GDP shrinking by 0.2 basis points month-over-month. China’s June growth rate was 6.2%, in line with consensus forecasts. May’s growth rate was 6.4%. By most standards, growth rate over 6% is good. China looks light years away from a recession. This is an economy that can handle pain. opened lower on Monday but rallied once the data came out, as investors in the mainland and in Hong Kong seem willing to bet for a little more stimulus. The economy did manage to pick up late in the second quarter thanks to targeted stimulus in the auto sector.
