Mall REITs catch a bid as Amazon sales tax decision ripples through the market Shares of real estate investment trusts focused on malls jumped Thursday after the Supreme Court ruled that states may collect sales taxes on internet companies that do not have a physical presence in their states. A retail industry group said the ruling "would give every retailer the opportunity to compete on a level playing field without government's thumb on the scale," and investors seemed to agree. Mall REITs like Brixmor Property Group, Inc. BRX, +0.72% was up 1% in late morning trading, while CBL & Associates Properties, Inc., a lower-class mall with exposure to stores like Sears Holdings Corp. SHLD, -2.43% jumped more than 2%. Investors have stayed away from REITs in general in recent months, spooked by rising interest rates, but many now see mall REITs as cheap enough to warrant a second look. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.42% was down fractionally midday.
