Oil down sharply as U.S. crude inventories rise Oil futures traded sharply lower Wednesday, extending losses after data showed an unexpected and large jump in U.S. crude inventories. The U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude for September delivery CLU8, -3.64% fell $2.40 on the New York Mercantile Exchange, or 3.6%, to $64.64 a barrel. The global benchmark, October Brent crude LCOV8, -2.90% dropped $1.91, or 2.6%, to $70.55 a barrel. The Energy Information Administration said crude inventories rose 6.8 million barrels in the week ended Aug. 10. Analysts surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a fall of 2.4 million barrels. Futures had been nursing losses ahead of the EIA data after the American Petroleum Institute late Tuesday said stocks had risen by 3.7 million barrels .
