Oil prices drop as weekly U.S. crude supplies jump unexpectedly Oil futures traded sharply lower Wednesday, pressured by a surprise jump in weekly U.S. crude supplies. Speculation that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries may decide to boost output to make up for a Venezuelan production shortfall and potential lost supply from Iran also contributed to the drop in oil prices. July West Texas Intermediate crude CLN8, -0.82% on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell 84 cents, or 1.2%, to $71.36 a barrel. July Brent crude LCON8, -0.70% the global benchmark, declined $1.18, or 1.5%, to $78.39 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe, a day after again testing territory above the psychologically important $80-a-barrel level. Early Wednesday, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that crude supplies climbed by 5.8 million barrels for the week ended May 18.
