U.S. oil benchmark drops on surprise jump in domestic crude supplies U.S. benchmark crude oil futures fell Wednesday, pressured by a surprise jump in weekly U.S. crude supplies. Speculation that the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries may decide to boost output to make up for a Venezuelan production shortfall and potential lost supply from Iran also weighed on oil prices, but global benchmark Brent crude managed to finish with a modest gain. July West Texas Intermediate crude CLN8, -0.72% on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell 36 cents, or 0.5%, to settle at $71.84 a barrel. July Brent crude LCON8, +0.10% gave up earlier losses to finish 23 cents, or 0.3%, higher at $79.80 a barrel on the ICE Futures Europe, stretching its climb into a third session in a row.
