Oil prices decline as U.S. output and gasoline stocks climb Oil prices declined Wednesday after a U.S. government report revealed a weekly climb in U.S. crude production, along with hefty weekly rise for gasoline stockpiles. The Energy Information Administration on Wednesday also reported a bigger-than-expected fall in crude inventories, but that decline also came “amid an upward adjustment to the domestic production number—now to the mighty heights of 11.9 million barrels per day,” said Matt Smith, director of commodity research at ClipperData. And “any bullish sentiment from the crude draw has been vanquished by emphatic builds to the products—particularly with gasoline, lifting inventories some 6 percent above the five-year average,” Smith said. West Texas Intermediate crude for February delivery CLG9, -0.19% was down 50 cents, or 0.9%, at $51.61 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. March Brent crude LCOH9, +0.23% slipped 15 cents, or 0.3%, to $60.49 a barrel on ICE
