The close: Energy stocks lead TSX higher as oil jumps on hopes of delayed tariffs on Mexico Canada’s main stock index edged higher in trading Thursday lifted by energy, materials and technology stocks as oil and gold prices rose. The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 15.15 points, or .9 per cent, at 16,227.8. Oil prices jumped more than 2 per cent on Thursday, reversing course after falling to near five-month lows in the previous session, following a report that the United States could postpone tariffs on Mexico. Story continues below advertisement Brent crude futures settled at US$61.67 a barrel, gaining US$1.4, or 1.7 per cent. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures settled at US$52.59 a barrel, up 91 cents, or 1.8 per cent. The benchmarks both rallied more than 2 per cent in post-settlement trade.
