The Houston company – an offshoot of long-gone Enron – explores for and produces oil and gas, mostly in West Texas' and New Mexico's Permian Basin but also in the Rockies, South Texas' Eagle Ford Shale and Appalachia's Marcellus Shale. Led by CEO Bill Thomas, EOG is one of the largest and well thought-of  independent oil and gas companies in the U.S., along with Concho Resources Inc. and Pioneer Natural Resources Co. It's also been a stock favorite for its innovative use of technology in the oilfield, which has earned it the nickname, the Apple of Oil.
