The nominations in rural Mohave County near Littlefield, Arizona, come as a surprise to local geologists and land managers, who told The Arizona Republic that past attempts to drill for oil and gas in the area have largely been unsuccessful. “I'm perplexed by this," said seismologist and geophysicist Ryan Porter, who teaches geology at Northern Arizona University. "There have been lots of wells drilled up there and there's not an oil field up there now, which means they probably didn't find anything." Geologically, Arizona has been a leading domestic producer of mined copper and uranium, but never a source of hydrocarbons. The state has zero operable petroleum refineries, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and ranks among the lowest-producing states with "no proved oil reserves nor natural gas reserves," according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Instead, Arizona imports most of the natural gas powering 45% of its in-state electricity use from New Mexico
