Ford Explorer SUV As Police Interceptor Employs Gas-Electric Hybrid In Place Of Fossil Power Only 2020 Ford Police Interceptor The trend away from sedans toward SUVs is taking hold at law enforcement agencies as well as for consumers, underscored by Ford Motor Co.’s newest Explorer SUV fitted out for police use with a V6 gas-electric hybrid and all-wheel-drive, the first of its kind. Ford is betting that police agencies will be drawn to efficiency as well as pursuit performance on the highway. The company has 1,100 orders for its 2020 Police Interceptor equipped with a hybrid powertrain, from a total of 8,000 orders, the rest equipped with conventional gasoline engines. Vehicle hybrid powertrains first gained attention in the Toyota Prius, a small unprepossessing car that offered superior fuel efficiency and was favored by environmental activists.
