Ford, VW Partnering On Truck Projects And (Maybe) Electric And Self-Driving Cars Volkswagen AG CEO Dr. Herbert Diess (right) and Ford Motor Co. President and CEO Jim Hackett at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Volkswagen AG Herbert Diess said working with Ford solves a problem for the German automaker in that while it has a strong economies of scale to build and develop passenger cars, that’s not the case with regards to light commercial vehicles and mid-size pickup trucks, where Ford is strong. “Sharing platforms and plants with Ford provides a very competitive scale effect, in this segment, with the effect that jointly we will become number one in this market segment,” said Diess. The companies said they intend to have the medium-size pickup trucks available in global markets as early as 2022, with commercial vans coming later.
