The fax machine for Sending documents in the office concept equipment needed in office Getty This week, MP Matt Hancock, Health and Social Care Secretary, announced that from 2020 all fax machines in the NHS will be phased out , with a ban in place to stop trusts purchasing them. According to the 9 December 2018 statement, the ban on buying fax machines will take effect from January 2019 and will be phased out by 31 March 2020. NHS organisations being monitored on a quarterly basis until they declare themselves ‘fax free’ and will be required to use secure email in an attempt to improve patient safety and cybersecurity. In July 2018, a Freedom of Information request (FOI) revealed that over 8,000 fax machines were being used by the NHS , with many frontline doctors taking to WhatsApp to have efficient communication.
