Investors were expected to go crazy for early-stage start-ups, and the emerging crowdfunding scene fitted perfectly into this optimistic narrative. Young innovative businesses would flourish because we, the crowd, could invest via an online platform and buy a slice of the action for as little as £10. The sector even got its own tax-free wrapper in the form of the Innovative Finance Isa. But investor enthusiasm began to wane as hard performance data emerged.
