At work, Baby Boomers often feel like dinosaurs. Opinions about the age ripe for extinction vary, but some say that 40 is the new 65—by 40 the Baby Boomer species should have been gone, retired, invisible, stopped taking up space in the office. Since the youngest Baby Boomers are now 54 years old, this would mean no Boomers in the workplace by now. But this is hardly the case. True, Baby Boomers are no longer a majority in the workplace. There are 41 million working Baby Boomers versus 56 million Millennials. Baby Boomers are eroding, not becoming extinct. Many of the Baby Boomers are not planning on retiring anytime soon, either because they can’t afford to or don’t want to stop working. Working past the age of extinction often means that Baby Boomers report to younger bosses.
