Fortress Biotech ( FBIO ) just accomplished something that not many companies in its place have successfully pulled off. In the space of one week, it both validated its business model while fending off naysayers focusing in on questionable accounting practices. I’ve been following Fortress for months ever since news broke from Reuters that the company had something of an unconventional relationship with National Holdings Corporation ( NHLD ). National Holdings is a brokerage firm which, until last month, Fortress owned a majority stake. Fortress was never accused of anything illegal, but the fact that a biotech holding company would take a majority stake in a brokerage firm that ended up initiating positive coverage on the company that owned it, was enough to raise eyebrows, including my own.
