The answer depends on whether customers see the startup's product as vastly superior to the ones offered by the giant companies. If that's the case, then the startup is likely to gain market share -- with a catch. Unless that startup has adequate capital and it's targeting a huge market, it may ultimately end up maxing out below the level at which it could go public and end up being acquired by one of those giant rivals.
