It's easy enough to see how the digital tendrils that have ensnared our attention in modern vehicles have created additional hoops to jump through during the simple act of driving. Beyond the ones and zeros, however, there are other, previously pure-of-heart features that have fallen prey to mission creep, that is to say an accumulation of extraneous functionality that in some cases threatens to negatively impact their original purpose. Mission creep sometimes comes from a good place, such as an automaker's desire to improve upon a long-standing piece of equipment. But more often than not, it's driven by the twin forces of marketing and design, which are more concerned with convincing customers to hand over their dollars than the actual human impact of altering how we use our vehicles.
