Getty When the global financial crisis began spreading like a callous cancer more than a decade ago, policymakers realized the over-the-counter (OTC) unregulated $55 trillion credit default swap (CDS) market was home to many unscrupulous bets that were eroding the entire banking system. The economic pain which followed was excruciating, and unless something is done now, another onslaught could be coming around again. As a regulator, w hile I said the OTC CDS market was part and parcel to the 2008 crash, it was the misuse and abuse of credit derivatives and the fact they were unregulated which was the real problemo. It wasn’t the CDS products themselves. Those, I argued, could actually serve a legitimate and important purpose.
