Intel acquires chip maker eASIC for undisclosed amount Intel Corp. INTC, +2.03% announced Thursday that it has acquired eASIC, a chip maker focused on ASIC and FPGA chips. Terms were not disclosed. In a release characterized as an "opinion editorial" from Dan McNamara, the leader of Intel's Programmable Solutions Group, Intel said that it expects the deal to close in the third quarter. "The addition of eASIC will help us meet customers' diverse needs of time-to-market, features, performance, cost, power and product life cycles," McNamara wrote. The move will expand Intel's move into FPGA chips, which was the main focus of its $16.7 billion acquisition in Altera Corp. in 2015 . eASIC, founded in 1999, applied for an IPO in 2015 , but eventually decided not to test the public markets. Intel shares were trading more than 2% higher late in Thursday's trading session, and have gained 13.2% this year as the S&P 500 index SPX, +0.79% has gained 3.8%.
