Retail Troubles Come In Many Forms -- Compare J.C. Penney and Nordstrom Friday, May 31, 2019 was a terrible day for most retailers. Many of the major retailers hit new lows on the stock exchanges as a result the announcement of possible additional tariffs on Mexican merchandise. As every economic student knows, higher costs of merchandise reduce sales momentum. The consumer will defer purchases since his discretionary spending power decreases with every price increase. The imposition of tariffs is irrational in my opinion. The healthy consumer spending we enjoyed recently has now been impacted by high tariffs on Chinese merchandise. Adding the new threat of hurting Mexican imports is very disturbing. I believe these tariffs will further undermine retailers. The weaker businesses, already struggling to compete in today’s increasingly competitive omnichannel marketplace, will find it tough to counter the new pressure. J.C.Penney is a perfect example.
