U.S. Mall REITs Underperform; Hoping For Trade War Win Portions of this article appeared in the Forbes Investor G20 meeting concept, flags of all members G20. 3D rendering Getty There’s a lot riding on the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan this weekend and I’m sure that most U.S. department store chain CEOs will be tuning in closely to determine whether or not U.S.-China trade tensions escalate or not. U.S. REITs have been relatively isolated thus far from the trade impacts, but if there’s not a deal soon, certain retail stocks could become pressured, specifically in the mall REIT sector. For investors it’s becoming a foregone conclusion that the best way to prepare for the risks are to deal with the trade war and begin to allocate capital in the safest sectors. While consumers have enjoyed healthy economic fundamentals (rising GDP and record low unemployment), they could soon experience sticker shock as retailers could be forced to raise prices.
