TJX, Target, And The Mystery of Retailing OK! People shopped more at TJX Macy’s J.C.Penney Kohl’s Nordstrom Walmart Target Why is there such a discrepancy between these stores? It’s not simply because some are discounters and general merchandise chains. One could point to various reasons. J.C.Penney is still trying to brush off the ashes of defeat brought on by a long period of poor management. It is revamping its total operation and hiring a new cadre of fine executives. That is all well and good, but it will take some time to see if it works. Macy’s has higher than anticipated inventory that they would partially attribute to the bad weather we had this spring. Kohl’s new management is struggling with its relationship with Amazon and probably was not promotional enough in the period. Nordstrom’s mea culpa also reflected missteps; they acknowledge problems in digital marketing and merchandising. In contrast, a clear focus on digital growth at Walmart and Target helped both companies.
