[+]McDonald’s has exerted on Black communities.Francis ShadAccording to the recently published book,Franchise: The Golden Arches in Black AmericaMcDonald’s provides some entry-level jobs, but not a living wage, and its food contributes to the large number of physical ailments that black people in low-income communities face such as obesity and diabetes. But it also helps a select number of African American franchisees become prosperous as owner operators.In fact, black franchisees composed fewer than 200 of the about 1,700 franchisees at McDonald’s.Chatelain acknowledges that 15 cent hamburgers in the 1960s appealed to the often working-class African-American audience in mostly urban areas.But she also documents the harmful effects of dining on a steady fast-food diet. For example, in 2015 75% of African-American adults were considered obese, more than 1.4 times that of their white counterparts.Most
