Private equity and private credit may improve returns of 401(k) plans in the long term, if done right, recent studies have shown. However, it may not be as much as plan participants hope. The assets have long been out of reach for individual investors but are becoming more accessible as new products come to market. In August, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to “democratize” access to alternative assets, such as private credit, private equity and cryptocurrencies, for 401(k) and other defined-contribution plans. The order directs the Secretary of Labor to reexamine fiduciary guidance on the investments in such plans, which are governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, or ERISA. While some have said the inclusion of private assets could strengthen portfolios, two recent analyses found there are caveats to that thesis.
