There's A New DNS Server On The Internet And Its Name Is CoreDNS You might read that title and ask, “Who needs a new DNS server?” On the other hand, you also might read it and wonder, “What’s a DNS server?” There are a lot of DNS servers out there. There’s BIND, of course, the granddaddy of DNS servers. BIND has been around in one form or another since the 1980s, believe it or not. Microsoft offers the Microsoft DNS Server in its server operating systems. NLnet, a Dutch nonprofit, has developed two excellent open-source DNS servers: NSD, an authoritative DNS server, and Unbound, a high-performance recursive DNS server. CZ.NIC writes an open-source DNS server called Knot. And there are many more. So, what makes CoreDNS special? To explain that, we need to examine the rise in application containerization.
