National Instruments Work is well underway on rolling out 5G. While the steps which brought us here have been evolutionary the effect of 5G will be revolutionary. As with each of the previous generations there is a lot of hype about what it will be and even more hype about when it will be. Some US networks are claiming this year, others point out that the full standards won’t be ratified. An unsatisfactory fudge is that anything later than 3GPP release 15, which was ratified on July 16 th 2018 can be called 5G. In practice 5G is such a suite of technologies it’s hard to pin down exactly what makes something fully 5G.
