An aspirin a day might not keep heart attacks away after all This may be a tough pill for many people to swallow. After decades of recommending that men over 50 and women over 60 take a baby (aka low-dose) aspirin to prevent heart attacks and stroke, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association scrapped that popular prescription on Sunday . Aspirin has been proven to prevent platelets from clotting together and blocking arteries, which can cause heart attacks and stroke. And the ACC and AHA note that it should continue to be taken under a doctor’s supervision by people who have previously had a cardiac event, or who have been diagnosed with some form of cardiovascular disease. In these cases, that daily 75 to 100 milligram dose of aspirin can significantly reduce the risk of a second heart attack or stroke.
