When I last wrote about New York Community Bank, ( NYCB ) I outlined all of the positives that I believe are being ignored by the market and suggested that the bear case has already been fully priced in. While there was a brief level of stabilization and recovery in November, when multiple members of the Federal Reserve suggested that interest rates are close to neutral , that brief optimism was swamped with selling this month, as the market now realizes that the Federal Reserve still feels that two interest rate hikes may be necessary in 2019, which is only slightly less painful than the three that the market was previously told to expect. For long-term investors, this should still be viewed as a positive. After all, interest rate hikes have been dogging New York Community Bank shares for the past couple of years, and any relief from further hikes, or even just a pause in the speed at which they are implemented, is a definite positive for this liability-sensitive bank.
