She grew up mostly in London, but when the Germans started their bombing campaign in 1940, was sent to Canada along with many other English children. In 1941, after Joseph Lash managed to intervene with Eleanor Roosevelt, Mary obtained a visa to enter our country and attended school at Elmira College in upstate New York. She married Philip Tulchin in New York City in 1946 and raised two children, David and Susan, in Great Neck, Long Island. Years later, Mary moved to Beaufort, South Carolina with her second husband, Fairman Black, and then after his death, lived in suburban Boston, near her daughter Sue. Mary always sought to serve others, particularly those less fortunate, and in recent years has been devoted to teaching art history - continuing even into last year.
