Neha Narkhede: Open Source Isn’t A Business Model, It's A Distribution Strategy Neha Narkhede believes building a technology business requires two things: an audience of developers and a revenue strategy. “How do developers find you and adopt you?” asks Narkhede, cofounder and CTO of Confluent, addressing the first of those challenges. “This problem of technology product distribution is largely solved in most of the open source companies, at least where the technology is really good and easy to start with.” But the second question of a revenue strategy is harder: Why should companies pay for open source software, which can be downloaded at no cost? Confluent is one of a new breed of open source companies that is banking on the answer being a hybrid model: a combination of selling an open core software offering where companies pay a subscription to use the software, as well as offering the software as a service, where companies pay a subscription to use cloud-based open source software
