Stocks open slightly higher on upbeat trade hopes, merger activity Stocks opened higher Monday, looking to rebound from last week's modest pullback, as investors appeared more upbeat on prospects for a so-called phase one U.S.-China trade deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.38% rose 75 points, or 0.3%, to 27,950, while the S&P 500 SPX, +0.48% was up 0.3% at 3,118. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.80% rose 0.6% to 8,569. A round of merger activity was also seen buoying stocks, analysts said. Among the highlights, Charles Schwab Corp. SCHW, -1.35% agreed to buy rival discount broker TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. AMTD, +2.87% in an all-stock deal valued at around $26 billion. Schwab shares fell 0.6%, while Ameritrade shares gained 3.4%. Shares of both companies rose sharply last week after reports they were in talks.
