Related news Shire ( SHPG ) stock flirted with a buy point Friday after China reportedly approved its $62 billion takeover by Japanese drugmaker Takeda Pharmaceutical. In afternoon trading on the stock market today , Ireland-based Shire's stock jumped 2.1%, near 176, in high volume . Earlier, the stock lifted as much as 177.61, touching a buy point out of a flat base that began forming in April. Chinese regulators cleared Takeda's takeover of Shire — lifting another hurdle to the merger. Takeda expects the deal to close in the first half of 2019, according to Reuters. If that happens, Takeda will become a top 10 drugmaker by market cap. The road to Takeda's Shire buyout was arduous. Rumors began circulating in March that Takeda could make a bid on Shire . When it finally did, the two pharmas went back and forth on price for six weeks before settling on a price at roughly $62 billion.
