‘Halloween’ sequel scares up $77.5 million in opening weekend LOS ANGELES—Michael Myers and “Halloween” staged a comeback at the box office over the weekend, collecting $77.5 million in a debut that brings the 40-year-old horror franchise back from the dead. “Halloween” nearly bested an October opening record set only two weeks ago by “Venom,” which grossed $80 million. The two hits, along with the strong showing of “A Star Is Born,” have contributed to an unusually healthy month for exhibitors and studios. “A Star is Born,” from AT&T Inc.’s T, +1.14% Warner Bros., followed in second place with $19.3 million, bringing its three-week total to $126.4 million. “Venom,” released by Sony Corp.’s SNE, -0.64% Sony Pictures Entertainment, added $18.1 million to its total of $171.1 million. “Halloween,” distributed by Comcast Corp.’s CMCSA, +0.11% Universal Pictures, reunites star Jamie Lee Curtis with Myers, the psychotic babysitter killer first introduced in the 1978 thriller.
