They are also, on their own, deeply misleading about what it actually costs to build a self-driving car. Three months ago, a single company raised nine times the entire current market size in one funding round. The Gap Between What the Software Sells For and What It Costs to Build Waymo closed a $16 billion funding round in February 2026 at a $126 billion post-money valuation, more than doubling its position from the $5.6 billion Series C it raised in October 2024 at a $45 billion valuation. Alphabet led the round. More than three-quarters of the new money came from Alphabet itself, with Dragoneer, Sequoia , DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz and Mubadala filling out the rest.
