SBB selects Hitachi Rail for €1.5bn digital network upgrade [Yahoo! Finance]

The initiative forms part of SBB's wider programme, which is valued at approximately €1.5bn ($1.76bn). The digital signalling project, expected to replace about 80% of existing interlocking systems over the next 20 years, will see Hitachi Rail deliver digital interlockings and radio block centres. These components are necessary for introducing a nationwide driver's cab signalling system. Hitachi Rail's solution is set to use smart object controllers based on the EULYNX standard. These controllers will oversee points, signals and track sections, as well as collect and report data on the condition of these assets, which supports predictive maintenance. The agreement covers an initial period of 10 years and includes options for three five-year extensions. It also provides for 25 years of maintenance and support for the installed systems.
