YouTube will soon begin using AI-powered age estimation technology to figure out which users are under the age of 18. Starting August 13th , YouTube will detect underage users in the US based on their activity and the age of their account, allowing the platform to automatically apply restrictions. These accounts will get the same protections YouTube already offers to users who identify themselves as under 18, including a block on age-restricted videos, non-personalized ads, “take a break” notifications , and a limit on repeated video recommendations about sensitive topics, such as body image. The platform will also automatically turn on reminders about privacy when users upload a video or leave a comment.
