Willie Walsh, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said Sunday that he expected the global airline industry's profits would be halved by the increases. Walsh also noted that the average increase in price for jet fuel since last year in in the 70% range, so airline flight cuts were likely inevitable. At the IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Rio de Janeiro, Walsh also told attendees that airlines, already operating on razor-thin margins, would have to raise fares to offset the increased costs.
