Here's what happened, and what it means. When Apple launches a new software cycle, it knows that some users aren't keen to jump aboard straight away. Perhaps because they fear it's not stable enough or they don't like parts of the new OS. Liquid Glass, the new design in iOS 26 has had a mixed reception, for instance, with some users with low vision finding it hard to use. Three iPhones (iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR) can run the new update and it's working for those phones. But all other iOS 18-compatible phones, that is, iPhone 11 to iPhone 16, can't access it. Apple's usual policy, and it's one it's stuck to this year, is to release additional versions of the previous year's software (in this case iOS 18) so that those resisting the joys of the new stuff can at least have the latest bug fixes and security updates.
