That sugar boycott took off, with women – the main food purchasers – refusing to buy slave-grown sugar. Kitchen-table speeches spread the word and hand-printed petitions made the rounds. So it was that, at a time when women couldn't vote, they found a way to take major political action. In 1833, the Slavery Abolition Act was passed, banning slavery across (most of) the British Empire. And yet these influential women – over 70 different groups across the UK – have somehow become mere background characters in the story of slavery's abolition.
