Stocks were flat to slightly higher Wednesday, as investors awaited the outcome of a Federal Reserve policy meeting and digested a wave of corporate earnings, including results from megacap tech giants Apple Inc. , Google parent Alphabet Inc. and Microsoft Corp. . The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 3 points to 35,055 after opening with a small gain, while the S&P 500 was up 0.1% at 4,406.09. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.4% to 14,712.76. The Fed is expected to leave its monetary-policy settings unchanged, but investors will be hunting for clues to plans to eventually begin scaling back the central bank's monthly asset purchases.
