A media company is not responsible for the death of a TV news reporter killed while on assignment covering a murder, a federal judge ruled. The family of Dylan Lyons, 24, sued Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum News 13, following Lyons' 2023 death. The lawsuit claimed Lyons' employers failed to protect him the day he was fatally shot citing his lack of safety training and equipment and brief professional career, according to the Orlando Sentinel. Senior District Judge Anne Conway issued a ruling April 3 stating the lawsuit failed to demonstrate Lyons wasn't aware of the danger at the crime scene with the shooter still at large, nor did it claim that his editors hid that fact from him. “Lyons's lack of experience is irrelevant to whether the danger was apparent and whether Defendant concealed or misrepresented the danger of the crime scene to Lyons,” Conway wrote in her decision.
