Daiso Can Give U.S. Dollar Stores A Run For Your Money Will Americans look at dollar stores the same way once they’ve been to a Daiso? Probably not. Daiso is the dollar store category translated into Japanese, with different products, and a dramatically different retail culture than its U.S. counterparts. The chain, which already has a strong presence on the West Coast, is making a push into the New York metropolitan area, opening its second store in the region this weekend, in Edgewater, N.J. Daiso, with 78 U.S. stores, is a tiny David to U.S. dollar store Goliaths Dollar General Corporation and Dollar Tree Stores Inc., both of which have in the neighborhood of 15,000 stores.
